Nyagatare District Hospital, located in Nyagatare District in Rwanda’s Western Province, is making significant strides in expanding its healthcare services. Serving a population of approximately 479,000 people, the hospital is set to revolutionize access to quality surgical care.

With the intervention of Dr. Hailu Yohanna Aregawi, a surgeon, and Dr. Paul, an anesthetist-both Ethiopian experts working on the integration of the 4x4 program-the hospital has expanded its scope beyond gynecology and obstetrics. Patients can now access vital surgical procedures, such as hernia repairs and others, without the need for long and costly referrals to Kigali or other distant medical centers. This initiative represents a transformative step in addressing local healthcare challenges.

Enhancing healthcare through the 4x4 Program Integration

Dr. Ndayamabaje K. Eddy, Director General of Nyagatare District Hospital, highlights that the 4x4 integration program plays a crucial role in improving patient care and overall service delivery. “This program is designed to bridge existing gaps in customer care and the quality of services offered to our population,” he explains. Additionally, the initiative aims to strengthen the health system workforce over the next four years, ensuring sustained improvements in service delivery.

Direct benefits to the community

According to Dr. Eddy, the introduction of expanded surgical services brings numerous benefits to the local population. Patients who previously faced long wait times or expensive travel to access essential procedures can now receive timely care within their own district. This advancement reduces delays in treatment, lowers costs for families, and ultimately improves health outcomes across the region.

Future plans for surgical expansion

Recognizing the growing demand for specialized care, the hospital is looking to further expand its surgical offerings. Dr. Ndayambaje says that orthopedic cases, in particular, are increasing, highlighting the urgent need for an orthopedic surgeon to address fractures and other musculoskeletal conditions. Additionally, the hospital aims to acquire a CT scan machine to better diagnose and manage trauma and injury-related cases, a critical need given the challenges of transferring patients requiring advanced imaging.

A community-centered approach to growth

The response from patients and the broader community has been overwhelmingly positive. “This is a major milestone for our region. Patients now have access to the care they need without unnecessary delays,” says Dr. Ndayamabaje.

However, as demand for these new services grows, the hospital faces challenges in staffing and resources. “We are experiencing a shortage of specialized medical professionals, including doctors and nurses. We are confident that with the support of the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, we will be able to address these gaps and continue providing top-quality care,” he adds.
